This retrospective study evaluates safety of elective tonsillectomy, adenotonsillectomy or tonsillotomy performed as day-care surgery in a cohort of 414 chilldren aged 2-15 years. The focus was on post-operative complications, defined as hemorrhage or unplanned contacts or revisits to the hospital. Bleeding occurred in 22 patients (6%) of whom 86% were older than 4 years of age, but readmissions due to pain or to complaints related to pain medication were most common in children below the age of 4 years. The authors conclude that easy access to telephone contact with hospital staff following discharge is very important when performing day-care tonsil surgery in children.
